Replacement Windows: A Quick Guide

Make the case to replace.

Where do you start on the road to replacement windows? With all of the choices available, it’s hard to decide. Let2022世界杯南美区预选赛 be your GPS – you tell us where you want to go, and we’ll give you the step by step directions to make sure you get there.
At home shows, community fairs, on TV, and in your neighborhood, you are being encouraged to renew the look of your home with replacement windows. Not a bad idea, but is it worth it? We’ve lined up some other options to consider. Before you get pressured into replacing all of the windows in your home, learn about the choices you have and make a decision that is comfortable for you.

When to replace?

The first decision can be the toughest. Is it time to replace windows? Here are some top reasons to consider replacement windows.

  • Are your windows able to close tightly, and lock? No? Replacement is something to consider.
  • Are there air gaps where you feel cold air coming in around the sash or window frame? If you can feel a draft, and you are not able to manage the air flow by caulking around the windows, it may be time for new ones.
  • Do the windows operate smoothly? Do the screens fit well, and keep bugs out? If the frame has become racked or out of square, the sash may not operate smoothly. You may find that you can’t put your screens in easily either. Time to think about replacing.
  • Is there any damage to your window? Are wood frames showing signs of rotting? Is there any visible water damage? Cracked, split or rotting wood frames should be replaced.
  • Are your windows more than 20 years old? Old windows do not necessarily need to be replaced based solely upon age. If they have been well maintained, a good quality window can last for years. If, however, you have any of the problems mentioned above, replacement may be the way to go.
  • Do you live in an area that requires you to have impact resistant glass, or to have storm shutters ready to hang if the forecast calls for high wind, hurricanes, etc.? It may be time to consider replacing windows with impact resistant glass.

With a new window, you will get the benefit of the latest materials, energy efficiency, and higher performance glass. And some newer windows come with great features such as sash that can be cleaned on both sides from the inside of your home.

Choices for replacement windows

Once you have decided to replace, there are several options. You can do a full replacement, which means removing siding on the exterior of your home, and trim inside, and doing a complete replacement of the window unit.
If your exterior and interior window frames are in good shape, you can opt for other solutions.
Narroline® Windows fromAndersen®、制造在1976年至2012年之间,可以converted with ease using Andersen Tilt Wash replacement windows. These wood windows give you new sash and jamb liners that fit into your existing window frame. Some of the advantages are obvious – there is little to no disruption to your home, and you have a brand new window unit. That means a new 20 year warranty on the glass, and a new 10 year warranty on the window, plus all of the updated features that you expect from a newly manufactured window. These windows, purchased from us and installed by your carpenter, can end up costing you far less than hiring a franchised installer to handle replacement. Replace windows at your pace, all units in the home do not need to be replaced at the same time.
For any brand of wood window – that is, a window that has a wood frame, wood jambs and stops – consider an Andersen insert window. The insert window works in your existing frame, with little disruption to the interior or exterior of your home. Keep in mind that by using the existing frame, the new unit you install within that opening may have a slightly smaller visible glass surface, and therefore let in a little less daylight. For most people, the convenience and ease of installation outweigh the slightly smaller size of the window. It is something to bear in mind as you consider your replacement options.

Replacing screens

Sometimes you just need a new screen, and we can help with that too. We stock a variety of Andersen window screens in popular sizes to fit Andersen patio doors, double hung, casement and awning windows. The screens that we stock are intended for use withAndersen 400 Series windows. Windows carrying the Andersen name that are from other suppliers may not accept the same screens. If you are having a franchised installer put in new windows, your screens should come with the window unit, and are only available for purchase from the franchise. Similarly, Andersen Windows purchased through some big box stores are a different series. We are able to order screens to fit as long as you are clear about where your windows were purchased. The differences are small, but evident enough to create a nuisance. The overall screen size may be the same, but the wing locks that hold the screen in place are positioned differently and may not align with your window, meaning the screen cannot be properly secured in place.
How do you decide what window screen you need? For Andersen brand windows, there is a glass code etched into a corner of the window which tells us the glass size. From there, we can backtrack to the type of window and the kind of screen needed. Be sure tocontact usfor help when you are considering window replacement. A call or avisit to the showroomcan help to answer your questions and make your selections.

How to Care for Wood Floors

When it comes to floor surface coverings, natural hardwood flooring is a favorite choice. Hardwood floors are timeless and strong and create a sense of warmth and luxury. Wood floors add enduring beauty to all types of homes and can meet the needs of you and your family’s busy lifestyles.

As with any type of flooring, hardwood floors require proper upkeep in order to maintain their appearance. Preserve the aesthetic appeal of your flooring investment and follow these steps to protect and care for your hardwood floor.

Sweep and dust daily
One of the most important hardwood floor maintenance tasks is frequent sweeping and dusting. Use a microfiber dust mop or cloth which acts like an electrostatic magnet to pick up dust and debris. When your dust mop head is dirty, simply throw it in the laundry and reuse it.

Vacuum weekly
Vacuuming will help you clean up particles that have made their way into the nooks and crannies of your floor. Use the bare floor setting on your vacuum to protect your floor from the beater bar – the rotating brush at the bottom of your vacuum that can damage your floor’s finish.

Use area rugs and runners
添加跑步者或面积地毯将帮助保护floors from scratches in high-traffic areas. A rug by your outdoor entry doors can collect mud, sand and other debris that people and pets bring in after being outside. Be sure to use rug pads to prevent slipping.

Finish your floors with a urethane or polyurethane coat
No wood floor is indestructible but a coat or two of urethane or polyurethane will provide an extra layer of protection. These finishes add durability and scratch- and water-resistance to your floor, while enhancing the wood grain.

Clean accidents pronto
Spills and other accidents and messes are facts of life – especially if you have children or pets. Clean up any mess immediately before it has a chance to dry. Use a damp cloth and then rub the area dry. The longer any type of food or fluid sits on your floor, the greater the chance your wood will stain, warp or start to dull.

Watch what you use on your floor
一些清洁剂可以伤害而不是帮助你的测控ood floor. Water, ammonia and vinegar can dull your floor and soap and wax can leave residue. When in doubt about what you can or can’t use on your floor, ask your wood floor dealer for cleaning recommendations.

How to choose a hardwood floor
If you currently do not have a wood floor but are thinking about having one installed, consider these family-friendly ideas:

  • Choose a solid hardwood species– Softwood species like American Cherry or pine are not recommended for high-traffic areas used by people or pets because this type of wood can scratch and dent easily.

While no wood is completely scratch proof, harder wood species such as Brazilian Walnut and Hickory are a better choice if you want to protect your floor from your scruffs and abrasions.

  • Camouflage with graining or distressing –Distressed wood or woods like oak that have grain and knots can add character to your floor while hiding dents and scratches.
  • Finish with a low-sheen– A high gloss finish reflects light which can make pet hair, dirt and scratches more visible.
  • Lighten up– Lighter woods tend to hide scratches, dents and other imperfections and damage.

How we helped a homeowner with a hardwood floor challenge
When it comes to wood flooring, Riverhead Building Supply is a世界杯2022赛程表比赛直播 . Every day we help our customers solve their most pressing home flooring challenges, such as the one described below.

The problem…
One of our customers wanted a dark wood floor but has grandchildren and a dog and was concerned about scratches. She was afraid any scratches would go through the stain and show the lighter wood underneath.

The solution…
Our team introduced her to roasted red oak. The wood is gently cured with heat and the entire board takes on a rich dark color all the way through. There is no stain color that can be scratched or worn off.

The result…
While this is a special process and adds to the cost of the flooring, it was worth it to the homeowner. She felt that it suited her lifestyle and was the best choice to achieve the look she wanted.

RBS’s PreHung Doors | Build Smarter, Build Better Series

What is Plumb, Level, Square and True Worth to You?

Quality control is important to us, and it is imperative to you. We found that getting door orders shipped in from different suppliers added too much handling to the materials, and too much potential for damage. Sometimes pre-hung doors arrived racked and skewed and out of square. That simply is not acceptable to ship out to you on a jobsite. Our craftsmen routinely would refuse orders, and fix (or replace) the problems that had occurred in transit. It added time to the whole order-to-delivery cycle, and a lot of labor, too. Then we thought, why not just make them here, so that there is less handling and we can set our own quality standards to follow? We have been creating pre-hung doors in our shop for over a dozen years, so you can depend on the level of quality you are going to get in every order. If you’ve tried us out for pre-hung doors, we’re pretty sure you’ve stopped hanging doors on your own on the jobsite, because your time can be spent on other important things.

And if you have never tried out Riverhead Building Supply, what are you waiting for? Why spend your time cutting jamb legs and heads, applying hinges, and hanging a door in a frame, then messing around with your level and shims in the rough opening until it swingsjussstright? We’ll ship you the door of your choice, in the frame of your choice, with the hinges you want. You tell us what stops you want, and we’ll hand apply those, then make sure the swing is correct, the boring is correct, and it is all plumb, square and true. You can still mess around with the level and shims on the jobsite, but that’s about all you’ll have to do to get perfectly hung doors.

  • 2022世界杯南美区预选赛 – choose from a wide range of styles, such as panel doors, louver doors, even specialty glass pantry doors
  • Doors can be fully primed or unfinished
  • Door frames can be made in any size and any species you need, you tell us your specs
  • Hinges – we start with Emtek, but you can change or upgrade to any type of fine hardware from suppliers like Baldwin, Ashley Norton, Deltana and others
  • Stops applied – our standard OG or eased edge, or any profile you can think of
  • Pre-hung doors for special applications, such as access doors, clipped corner doors for under stairwells

This videogives you a peek at our shop, so you can see how we assemble your order. Interested in seeing more?Let us knowif you would like a tour of our manufacturing area where we are pre-hanging doors, milling mouldings, making custom cabinetry and custom doors, assembling windows, and more.

RBS Same Day Delivery | Build Smarter, Build Better Series

We are asked often about our motto,Build Smarter. Build Better. It’s not just a string of words that we threw together. That phrase is a guiding principle for you, as much as it is for us. You have much to gain by using the smartest methods, tools, and operations. Smart estimating and planning means a better schedule on the job. Smarter choices for products result in a better finished product. Making smarter choices when you hire, buy a new truck, replace power tools – just about anything you do – will give you better outcomes. The same goes for our business. We strive to make smarter and better choices every day, to give you what you need for a productive and successful build.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be exploring the topic, and what it means to all of us. This week we’re starting with something you may have heard about, maybe you don’t know why it’s special.

Same Day Delivery

  • Delivered: one more square of GAF American Harvest Nantucket Morning roofing shingles, from Hauppauge to Bay Shore, to finish off a roof
  • Delivered: 1 header and some framing lumber, from Middletown to Portsmouth, because the homeowner saw the opening and decided a door would look much better than the window you were installing
  • Delivered: 16 LF of crown moulding from Port Jefferson to Belle Terre, because your new helper cut twice but only measured once
  • Delivered: 2 boxes of coil nails, because the ones you picked up are for a different tool

Same Day Delivery is available to help you out when you get to the job and have one of those forehead-smacking, “I-forgot-the-milk” moments. We’ll take the manpower hit for you, so you don’t need to leave the job during the day to pick up the stock items you need. We know your time is valuable, and depending upon your jobsite and how many people are working on it, you may not have the luxury of sending someone back to the lumber yard to pick up forgotten items. On those days, give us a call and try out same day世界杯2022赛程时间表最新 . Call by 11 AM, and we’ll have it there before we close for the day.

Same Day Delivery is for in-stock items from your local Riverhead Building Supply location. And when we say in-stock, there are plenty of items that are in stock at each location, from your building basics like framing and sheathing, to roofing and siding. Of course, every location has a slightly different array of day-in, day-out stock. We try to stock the most popular items for each locale. In East Hampton that might mean 18” Perfections, and in Hauppauge it might mean Exterior Portfolio vinyl siding. While same day delivery can’t take the place of your normal job planning and preparation, we can help you out when you need to change the framing for what was going to be a window into framing for a patio door. Plan ahead, make your materials lists and get your orders set up like you always do; pre-planning is just good business, and a smarter, better way to use your resources. But when you forget something and need it on the job to keep your work moving along on schedule, call us at either (800) 378-3650 for our New York locations or at (800) 874-9500 for our New England locations!

RBS Premium Lumber | Build Smarter, Build Better Series

Today’s homeowner is a smart and diligent person, with access to global resources in the palm of their hand. Your clients have done their homework, and know the basics of what is going on behind the drywall. How do you think they feel when they see the materials delivered to their home for their new nursery, the finished basement that will become a playroom for the kids, or the long awaited spa-like bathroom renovation?

The choices are no longer about just the structural specifications of the framing material (which, of course, is specified by your local building code anyway). The conversation now is about what the lumber looks like, how much moisture content it has, how straight and true each piece of material is, does it have a full face for driving nails and screws, is it going to stay straight once installed, is it contributing to potential mold growth?

If you don’t think your clients notice what you’re putting in their walls, think again. Thisdiscussion thread, with user photos, is from a Houzz.com member questioning precisely what is going in the walls of her new addition.

What’s more interesting than the homeowner’s concerns are the replies from some of the builders and carpenters, saying in effect, “that’s what all lumber looks like now.”

No, folks, that is NOT what all lumber looks like, at least not at Riverhead Building Supply. Selling premium lumber products is not just a point of pride to us, it’s a good business decision for us, for you, and for the people who live in the homes that it goes into. We take the time to find premium lumber from certified and trusted mills and suppliers. Just as you hold us accountable for the materials you buy from us, we hold our suppliers accountable for what we receive from them. You can shop around and price out framing material and come up with a range of prices, and we know ours won’t be the cheapest. We’re not aiming to sell you cheap lumber. We want to offer you the best product available for your framing package. And, in our opinion, you get what you pay for, not just when you’re building the home, but after the drywall is up and a few years have passed.

Clean, bright, dry framing material looks good when it is delivered, looks good when it is being used, and creates a more consistent framework for your sheathing on the exterior and your drywall inside. It has little or no wane, for better attachment points for screws or nails. Kiln dried material brings a much lower threat of the studs twisting inside the wall cavity. It has a lower moisture content that makes it more stable in the long run. Over time, you’ll see less settling, fewer nail pops or dimples over screws from studs shrinking or twisting, fewer cracks in the drywall. Over the whole build, combining the prices of all the materials needed for new construction or remodeling, such as framing, sheathing, windows, doors, decorative hardware, and trim, the difference of using just any dimensional lumber and our premium will be minimal. Isn’t your reputation, and your time, worth a little added insurance up front to avoid tear-outs, do-overs and callbacks, or damaging word-of-mouth comments from your clients, after the job is complete?

If you want to take deeper look, to peel-back-the-bark so to speak and get your lumber geek game on, here are the facts about dimensional lumber:
Dimensional lumber is the collective term used to describe “2 X” through “4 X” lumber, in certain widths. Thisguidefrom the Western Wood Products Association explains how dimensional lumber is graded.

维的木材以其力量和分级use as a structural piece of material. In that sense, anything graded and stamped as dimensional lumber (and all structural lumber must carry a grade stamp) will perform to the specifications the WWPA has set forth for that grade. Premium or Appearance lumber is the same material that has been further sorted by how it looks. It is accumulated by pulling the best appearing product from the run of lumber. It has fewer and smaller knots, and no wane. No wane allows the full surface of the board for attachment points for drywall, cabinetry and trim, giving you a better finish. Premium lumber takes a little more effort to select, and results in a brighter, cleaner and better performing piece of lumber in the long haul.

In our Long Island locations, we are transitioning our inventory from Green Douglas Fir (GDF) to Dry Douglas Fir in our 2X4, 2X6 and 2X8 dimension lumber. (Our 2X4 and 2X6 pre-cut studs have always been kiln dried (KD) premium, in all locations, in case you were wondering.) What does this mean to you? Kiln drying is a standard practice in wood production mills that brings green lumber moisture content to a range that is deemed more workable and more stable. With a lower moisture content, it is dry enough that it won’t warp or check while acclimating to its new home, but still has enough moisture to be easy to work with. Expansion and contraction due to moisture will be minimal. Green lumber, on the other hand, will tend to crack, warp and check as the board shrinks in a heated space. KD lumber will stabilize in your home environment more quickly, and you are less likely to experience those problems. Our premium lumber just looks better, too. You will have brighter lumber, without the discolorations of GDF.

We’re confident that this product will save you time by giving you more usable pieces of lumber in every unit. Buyingpremium lumberfrom Riverhead Building Supply is one more way to Build Smarter. Build Better.

Kitchen Remodel: Timeline

厨房的改造是一个很大的工作,将临时orarily disrupt your household’s routine. So it is understandable that most homeowners are anxious to get the project done quickly. What kind of timeline can you expect for your kitchen renovation? The amount of electrical and plumbing work will factor in heavily into how long it will take to complete your remodel, as will the type of cabinetry you choose.

Your cabinetry and contractor will often control the timeline

The kitchen remodel timeline generally works around your contractor’s schedule, but your kitchen designer will be able to tell you the estimated lead time based on your cabinet manufacturer.

Riverhead Building Supply’s JoAnn Lyles, CKD said that “Depending on the brand of cabinetry, your new custom kitchen could take up to 12 weeks from order date to completion. The actual construction phase may be just two or three weeks.” She said she usually recommends scheduling “the appliance delivery to coincide a day or two after the cabinetry delivery.”

Barry Gano, a Riverhead Building Supply kitchen designer, agreed. He said while “stock cabinets could take 2-3 weeks; custom cabinets can take from 8-12 weeks.” Countertops may be installed 2-3 weeks after cabinet delivery.

Plan on delays

Gano added that the most important thing a customer should understand when planning their kitchen remodel is that “there will be delays.”

As with any type of construction project, there may be some unforeseen obstacles that may disrupt the completion schedule. Some of the things that may impact your renovation timeline include:

  • Weather conditions
  • Items arrive damaged and need to be returned and exchanged
  • Changes to original plans
  • Products being out of stock and on back order
  • Special order items
  • Delays getting necessary permits
  • Specialists such as plumbers or electricians being unavailable for a certain amount of time

Nelson Schneider, also a kitchen designer, said that “When a customer asks about the length of time for their project, I advise them that there are a lot of variables that go into that answer,” including “what is being replaced, what is being reused, etc.”

Some factors that can help your kitchen renovation go more quickly include:

  • Proper planning with a kitchen designer
  • Using stock cabinets
  • Getting all the necessary permits as soon as possible
  • Adhering to the original plans – avoid making changes during the construction phase

The kitchen renovation process can seem overwhelming but it is important that every element is completed correctly to exact specifications, even if that means stretching out the timeline a bit. In the long run, the inconvenience and disruption will be worth it. JoAnn Lyles, CKD said, “Your kitchen is an investment in your home and quality of life. Plan to set up a temporary kitchen if you have to be there during the renovation. A microwave, paper plates, and grilled dinners will get you through.”

Building the Dream with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk

When it comes to residential construction, what better partnership for a building materials supplier than to join forces with Habitat for Humanity? The Riverhead Building Supply affiliation with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk started in the late ‘80s, with chapter director Roger Metcalf first meeting with Edgar Goodale to share Habitat for Humanity’s goal of helping deserving families to realize their dream of home ownership. Riverhead Building Supply was part of that first Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk build, and is currently helping to complete a project in East Quogue.
Over the years, Riverhead Building Supply has contributed to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk in a variety of forms, from donating materials and providing labor to offering special prices for Habitat for Humanity home builds. Riverhead Building Supply estimates that it has provided Habitat for Humanity with enough 2 x 4s to easily stretch the 90 miles from Montauk to the Suffolk County border, if placed end to end. In addition to helping build homes in Suffolk County, Riverhead Building Supply has also donated materials to Re-Store, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s retail store.

Habitat for Humanity home dedication ceremonies are a particularly heartwarming and emotional event, and seeing families receive the keys to their new homes has been a gratifying experience forRiverhead Building Supplyand its employees.

Below are some images from the most recent home building site, in East Quogue, NY.

Rose’s Care and Share: Hundreds of Coats, Hats, Toys Donated to Children in Need

Rose’s Care and Share, a charitable organization that assists children and families in need, is named in honor of Riverhead Building Supply coworker Rosemary Densieski. Rose died in a tragic auto accident in 2001. Through the efforts of her family, friends, and coworkers, Rose’s Care & Share was created to continue her spirit of giving and helping the community.

Contributions to Rose’s Care & Share during the year help to fund holiday gifts for children in Long Island communities. Each year,Riverhead Building Supplyemployees shop for and wrap items for each child based upon a wish list sent in by the child or family. Some of our talented employee crafters knit or crochet warm winter hats and scarves to include. Wrapped gifts are put into sacks for each child, loaded onto a Riverhead Building Supply truck and delivered by Santa. In the last two years alone, over 120 children, between the ages of 1 – 18, have received the goodwill of this charity.
